MPHA Issue Priority

Environmental Health

A growing body of evidence links a variety of illnesses, including cancer, asthma, diabetes, birth defects, and neurological and immune system disorders to toxic Child with asthma inhalerchemicals. Exposure occurs both from industrial pollution contaminating our air, water, and food,
and from consumer products such as cosmetics, pesticides, and toys which contain dangerous chemicals. Children – and especially the developing fetus – are uniquely vulnerable to health damage from these substances.

Fortunately, safer alternatives to toxic chemicals exist, and many more await development. MPHA
is a lead member of the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, a coalition that brings together labor, health, religious, and environmental organizations to advocate for safer alternatives to toxic chemicals.
In 2006, AHT won passage of legislation to reduce mercury pollution by phasing
out the use of the toxic heavy metal in products.

In addition, MPHA is a partner in an initiative to reduce pesticide spraying in Boston’s public housing through the use of Integrated Pest Management. MPHA also hosts a Healthy Schools web page featuring links to resources on indoor air quality, reducing toxins, and other concerns.
